Its name - meaning "Island of Deer" in French - dates to the 17th century, when thousands of Javan deer were introduced by Dutch settlers. The deer are long gone, but the island's extraordinary natural beauty endures: powdery white sand beaches, gin-clear turquoise lagoons, and coral reefs teeming with tropical marine life.
